Our Curriculum
At Hampton, we have subject specialist teachers in PSHE, English, Science, Music, Maths and a SEND head who is able to support teachers to assist some of our children with needs to access the same curriculum through differentiated schemes of work and bespoke resources making our curriculum truly inclusive, and all of this is underpinned by the Cambridge curriculum. We see foundation subjects as important, and our emphasis on the core subjects gives us the opportunity to deliver a holistic learning journey in all subjects for our children, especially in the arts (Music, Art and Design Technology) and Humanities.
English Language

Oral and written communication are vital life skills. The English curriculum, which encompasses speaking, listening, reading and writing, provides the foundation for lifelong learning. Good communicators are a necessity in the professional domain, and at Hampton Prep our aim is to equip and inspire our pupils to fulfil their potential.
The English curriculum is designed to equip the children with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. All the children at Hampton Prep will learn to read for pleasure and information, and appreciate our rich literary heritage. They will acquire a wide vocabulary and a good understanding of grammar and punctuation – which is used to write accurately and clearly in a wide range of contexts, for different purposes and audiences. Our aim is to make the teaching of English truly inter-curricular, with writing activities linked to all subjects.
By introducing pupils to a wide range of literature, composition styles and technical knowledge, the English department aims to:

Science

❍ Developing the confidence, knowledge and skills to find answers to questions about the scientific world will be crucial for Hamptonians to become well-informed citizens. As well as appreciating the achievements of scientists who have gone before, the practical study of science teaches young people to plan and conduct investigations, gather information, work in a team and evaluate their findings – all vital transferrable skills for success in their wider education and life in general.
❍ The science curriculum aims to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of the disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. Pupils will learn about nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries which help them understand the world around them. They learn about how science affects their lives today and what discoveries will mean for their future.
❍ The subject is very much practical-based and the children will learn to work together to solve problems by designing experiments and carrying them out. A range of computing programmes will be used in the subject and there is a strong link to technology.

Mathematics

Understanding numbers and mathematical processes is vital for everyday living. From simply shopping and paying bills to investing money, working with computers and carrying out projects around the home, good skills in Mathematics are essential. Success in Mathematics is also required for many of the top professions, including careers in medicine and veterinary medicine, engineering, science and technology, finance, computing and teaching. Hamptonians will be taught the basic principles of Mathematics at an early age and these will be reinforced and developed in preparation for further study.
The mathematics curriculum is designed so that the children at Hampton Preparatory become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, are able to reason mathematically, and are able to find solutions by applying their Mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication. Teaching will be in sets throughout the school, so teachers can ensure good progress is made, and pupils reach their full potential in the subject. Formal teaching will be interspersed with practical and inter-curricular activities.
In the Maths department we will aim to allow all pupils to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts at a rate suitable to each individual to ensure that they maintain confidence in their ability and develop a secure foundation, particularly in arithmetic skills. Our small class sizes will allow teachers more time to work with individual pupils. Our more able pupils will be extended by various competitions, including various global maths competitions, gifted learning programmes aimed at the top 20% young mathematicians in the country. We will also have a specialist remedial maths teacher who works 1:1 with individual pupils if needed.

Information and Communication Technology

💻 Children will be taught to design, write and debug programs to accomplish specific goals. They will use logic to explain how simple algorithms work. They will be taught how computer networks, such as the internet, function and how to use search technologies effectively. Pupils will be taught to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
🖥Computing lessons will take place in the Computing Room and tablets are available for use in Computing lessons and for independent research in all other curriculum areas.
Whatever pupils go on to do in the future, IT skills will most probably be essential, as everyone is now expected to have sound computer skills. Outside of the classroom and the work place, skills such as using a digital camera and subsequent editing of photographs are now required in everyday life. Pupils will therefore be taught the following skills:

🖌 At Hampton, we believe that Art should be an integral part of school life, whether it is done in the classroom as part of a weekly lesson, outside as part of a History, Geography or Science lesson, or in one of the many extra-curricular clubs. Our thoughtfully designed Art curriculum will foster creativity, experimentation, imagination and an awareness of many different types of art, craft and design.
🖌Pupils will study a variety of artwork and design and use a range of tools and techniques to produce and develop their own work. Areas of study include drawing, painting, 3D work, textiles, collage and printing.
We believe every child is an artist and our aim is to build confidence through creative play and visual self-expression so as to allow their potential to flourish. Drawing will underpin everything we do and will be the skeleton onto which we build any body of work.
An expansive range of skills and techniques will be taught and will be used to develop imagination and independent creative thinking.
Pupils experience will be taught the full range of both 2D and 3D processes. Pupils will enjoy learning and be inspired by watching our Artist in Residence at work. Every pupil will have the opportunity of exhibiting their work around the school and each week, one piece of art will be highlighted and become the ‘Picture of the week’.
Personal, Social and Health Education

At Hampton Prep we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class & school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
PSHE is embedded throughout daily life at Hampton Prep. We model positive relationships, self image and communication skills with others in all our day-to-day interactions, as well as teaching skills explicitly in Circle Time and in P.S.H.E. lessons.

At Hampton Prep, PSHE is considered paramount to our students’ personal development, health and well-being. Physical Education

Physical education is a fundamental part of the curriculum across all years at Hampton Prep. All pupils are able to take part in a physical activity every day, either through PE sessions, games time or after school club. Hamptonians are able to develop their fitness and physical skills across a vast range of sports and in chosen areas of interest or talent. Fitness becomes a normal part of following a healthy lifestyle for Hampton students and is an ethos that will stay with them for a lifetime.
Through our Physical Education and Sports curricula we aim to provide opportunities for our pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, and to excel in competitive sport. Competing in sport also helps build character and embed values such as fairness and respect. In extra-curricular clubs they can also play football and cricket. All pupils take part in matches, galas and tournaments with other schools.
Religious Education

The study of religion and philosophy challenges pupils and equips them to lead constructive lives in the wider modern world. As they reflect on and develop their own values, opinions and attitudes in light of their learning, they enhance their spiritual and moral development, as well as their understanding of other cultures, faiths and lifestyles.
Pupils are encouraged to listen, to think of others and to develop self-awareness and respect for others. Pupils learn about the major festivals of world religions including Diwali, Hanukah, Chinese New Year, Remembrance, Nativity, Lent and Easter. Understanding of the importance of respect for others continues to be enhanced and encouraged through communication and recall exercises and activities.
Further enquiry into world religions is encouraged through research using books and online resources. Year 5 pupils investigate Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism and aspects of faith including places of worship, key religious people and festivals. Year 6 pupils investigate Islamic commitment to the five pillars of Islam, Christian and Muslim perspectives on life after death, and questions of eternity. Greater analysis is encouraged through comparing and contrasting, interpretation and extended essays.
History

Hampton pupils will travel in time, from Ancient Egypt through to the 20th Century. Along the way they begin to understand what life was like for our ancestors and those in far-flung countries, and learn to analyse and evaluate historical evidence and present their findings in well-constructed essays. At Hampton Prep, History will be taught broadly and chronologically from the Stone Age to the First World War, so pupils develop knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history; noting connections, contrasts and trends. Alongside more formal teaching, the children will be encouraged to investigate a time period by looking at, and analysing source materials.
📘People make history through their actions and decisions and in so doing shape the future. By studying some of the exciting and significant events and personalities from the past we aim to:
• Help pupils make sense of the world around them.
• Develop their own sense of identity and understand other cultures.
• Understand concepts of time, change and continuity.
• Think about right and wrong and what it means to be good citizen.
• Prepare for the future.
Pupils in the lower and middle school will be taught history by class teachers whilst pupils in Years 6-8 will receive specialist teaching. Pupils are encouraged to acquire an in depth knowledge of the topics studied and develop their thinking, analytical and literacy skills through discussion, extended writing and source analysis. A whole school project will be studied by all children on the Nigerian history which will result in presentations being delivered by children in lower and middle school and creative displays around the school.
